Africa Community Outreach
Nearly two-thirds of the population on our African continent is dependant on,or involved in agriculture. If we want to reduce poverty, feed all our people and develop then agricultural productivity must increase. We cannot ignore or bypass this large sector of our population. Agriculture and rural development have progressed significantly in Asia and Latin America, why not in Africa? We need young Africans to take up the challenge and invest their time and brain-power in agriculture. This is the reason why we took a trip to a small region in Kenya known as Kiagwanci. This community is based on small-scale, resource-poor farmers who have to eke out their livelihoods from agriculture. There is a sort of informal trade and marketing but all the profit seem to be going to the agents. Its time the Karia farmers' group got heard.

Its Never too late for the farmers' to embrace the digital world. We were overwhelmed by the turn out of the farmers' group to learn how to use Computers to send Emails, upload photos and to using ipods. Its was the first time most of them have ever seen such a 'Television'. The more it dazzled them the more they wanted to 'click' 'click' snap snap whatever they could capture on camera.

Recently, the Karia farmers' group had an opportunity to acquire an offline software from Biovision Click here to learn more about Infonet Biovision Offline Version! This software enables the farmers to identify a certain problematic disease, Compare with the pictures of infected crops and then recommendation on treatment is made. We accompanied Monique Hunziker and her group to Kiagwaci and I should state that the farmers were excited on learning new ways by which to use technology in offsetting their cost in extension work.

Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything by it? Will it restore him to a control over his own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to self-reliance for the hungry?’
