Fenugreek and Alfalfa


Fenugreek

(Leguminosae, Trigonella foenum-graecym)

Fenugreek is a popular leafy vegetable because of its recuperative properties.

Qualities

It is pungent, bitter and warm but also appetizing, light and dry.

Medicinal Uses

It helps reduce cholesterol.

It also aids in coughs, sore throats, rheumatism, piles and minor indigestion. It is a course of therapy for pregnant women and patients suffering from fever and dyspepsia.

It promotes bile and prevents diarrhea. It is also used as a laxative and for anaemia, ulcers and rickets.

Use

Fenugreek leafy herb should be taken in juice-form.

Fenugreek extract should be from the raw vegetable. It can also be taken in its soup-form.

The soup should be boiled or steamed from a pressure-cooker.

A juice-mixer is convenient for preparing the soup. Two spoonfuls of fenugreek-juice removes indigestion.

Boil 2 teaspoons of cracked seeds per cup of water and simmer for 10 minutes. Up to 3 cups per day is recommended.

It is not for children under two.

A physician should advise medicinal doses.

Alfalfa

(Medicago sativa)

‘Al-Fal-Fa’ ,as pronounced means “Father of All Foods”.

The name originated centuries ago from the Arabs as feed for their horses because it made them strong and swift.

Qualities

The roots of alfalfa plant burrow deep into the earth reaching minerals inaccessible to most plants.

It contains Vitamins ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘D’, ‘E’ and ‘K’.

It is high in protein and contains phosphorus, iron, potassium, chlorine, sodium, silicon, magnesium and other trace elements. It has 8 enzymes known to promote chemical reactions that enable proper food assimilation in the body.

This alkaline grass alleviates acidity of the blood and body.

Medicinal use

It is good for the heart as it energises it.

Its chlorophyll content is a powerful antiseptic. It destroys hostile germ infested in the intestines. Germs of contagious diseases are killed while other diseases are controlled.

It has been effective for stomach ailments, gas pains, ulcerous conditions, dropsy and the pain and stiffness of arthritis.

Alfalfa tea has no uterine stimulants therefore is safe for pregnant women and nursing mothers who don’t want caffeine beverages.

Use

Juice can be extracted by pounding alfalfa.

The juice can be very strong and pungent but combined with other veggie juices like spinach or carrots can be quite good.

Alfalfa herb tea posses no unfriendly elements and can be given to children and adults of all ages.

1-2 a teaspoon of dried leaves per cup of water steeped 10-20 minutes is recommended. The tea is especially pleasant when combined with a mint flavoured herb.

Up to 3 cups per day will lower cholesterol.
